FOLLICULITIS

Folliculitis is a type of Pyoderma (pyo-pus, derma-skin), in that the structure of the affected skin is the hair follicle, part responsible
for the formation of the hair located in the middle layer of the skin.

Folliculitis is not contagious. Can be caused by bacteria and other microorganisms.

Once inside the follicle, the bacteria produce irritating substances, which cause tissue
destruction and inflammation, pain and pus are generated with the arrival of defense
cells to the affected site.

The pus formed dries on the skin surface, forming a crust usually yellow (the color depends on the
type of bacteria involved) and adhered to the hair, that fall along with it.

This dermatitis is opportunistic, that is, it’s not picked up or transmited to others. There needs to be a factor that favors the entry of microorganisms and the installation of skin problem. Among such factors stand out as the main causes of Acne, seborrhoea, atopy  (allergic skin reaction that is found in animals) and infestation by Demodex mange sp (tiny parasitic mites that live in or near hair follicles of mammals).

How do I know if my pet has Folliculitis?

Be wary whenever finding yellow crusts and areas where hair is missing. That’s right: it’s not just
ringworm that can leave your pet with hairless on the body!

In addition, it is common for the rash (or itching) and redness on the skin.

How to treat Folliculitis?

As the invading microorganism is within the follicles, in the skin, no shampoo or ointment or cream (used on the surface) will reach the source of the problem. This type of skin change will only be resolved with treatment from the inside out, with specific medications for each case and for long periods. In this case it is recommended your pet to be seen by a veterinarian.
